Find Yourself A Hobby

Rebecca Jackson • February 24, 2021

Hobbies are incredible Joy Producers, take one up, new or old.

The next step in our "7 Steps to Finding Your Dazzling" Blog Series is where we think all the fun really truly starts to happen. This step is all about exploring yourself and the the things that you enjoy doing and learning about new things you don't really enjoy. You can find new things you are good at, or discover some the things you find joy regardless of your skills, or lack there of. Step #4 - Find Yourself A Hobby is the point in our process where you truly find the things you enjoy. Not the things you have to do. Not the things that are obligations or responsibilities in your life. Those things sometimes require us to draw from our "Joy Supply", no matter how fixed or necessary they may be in our lives, they are not always "Joy Producers".  This step is about creating "Joy Producers" in your life so that when you need to draw on that "Joy Supply" in hard or trying times, you can get by a little easier and have the supply of joy needed to draw from in those seasons so that you don't run dry.

When trying to look for something new, it's important that it be something you enjoy, not something you are necessarily good at, or something that comes naturally. It's only important that you enjoy it. So many of my favorite hobby's are those that I am terrible at, but still find great joy in the process or the attempt. Golf for example, I remember thinking it was so weird that I enjoyed playing it after finishing my first full round at nearly triple the par. I laughed the whole way home from that round though, I had enjoyed quality time with someone I love, AND to top it off I got to be outside in warm and beautiful weather. For me in that single round of golf I stockpiled the joy. In some cases the company I keep while participating in the hobby is where the majority of the joy is produced. In some hobbies it is more based on the location, in other hobbies it is the refined focus and ease of enjoyable productivity that produces the most joy. In the best hobbies, you can get all three, the activity, the location and the company all encouraging a super "Joy Supply" refill!

Here is an illustration we hope you find helpful when beginning your hunt for a new hobby!

Now like we have been sure to point out in each of our previous blogs in this series, Step #1 - Back to the Basics, #2 - Step Up Your Game, & #3 - Do Something Little Just For You it is important to remember to approach this step at your own pace and within your own abilities and needs. It's not about completing the process, the real results come from the process and being sure to personalize this process specifically to you is the absolute best way to achieve Dazzling results! Though this illustration shows you the 5 hobbies we all need in our life, this step is about choosing one. It may be an addition to an existing list of hobbies, it may be your first one, but choosing ONE is your only objective. Once you choose, give it a real try. Don't just "one and done" the experiment. The goal is to genuinely give a new hobby a try and sometimes true joy in a hobby only comes after persistence has played a role. Try it a few times, try it a few ways, try it with different company, try it in a few places, just try and experiment, safely and within reason. Consider picking up an old hobby again, one that sparked joy easily in a past season of life, maybe adapt an old hobby to consider new additions in your life. Just look for ways to grow yourself and find joy at the same time for play. We all need to remember to just have fun. Now go find yourself a hobby and don't forget to drop back because our last few steps in this Blog Series will be dropping quickly!
